Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Energy storage and peak load management.

Storage systems smooth out consumption peaks, maintain power quality, and enhance the flexibility of the energy center under variable load profiles.

What's included

  • — Peak shaving and offloading of generating capacities
  • — Frequency and voltage support
  • — Increased stability during transient conditions
  • — Flexible scaling in terms of power and energy capacity

Coordinating energy sources

Sharing demand between generation and storage

Each source has an assigned function in a hybrid configuration. A gas engine can provide primary output, a battery can participate in transitions, and a diesel generator can perform a standby role.

Sustained generation

The gas engine is sized for the part of electrical demand it is intended to supply under the power center’s operating strategy.

Short-term energy exchange

BESS can supply additional demand and store surplus energy. Its contribution is limited by power rating, available capacity and state of charge.

Supply when the gas engine is unavailable

A diesel source is specified for selected backup events, including a gas engine shutdown or an interruption in gas supply.

Responding to changes in demand

The following is a possible control strategy to validate for the chosen configuration, not a completed-project description.

  1. Demand remains level

The gas engine carries the main load. Other sources maintain the operating states and readiness specified in the design.

  2. The site needs more power

Gas engine output rises within operating limits. Storage may contribute additional power while the load is redistributed.

  3. Demand has fallen

Gas engine output is reduced. If the battery can accept charge, some surplus energy may be directed into storage.

  4. The gas engine has stopped

Where the system is designed for it, BESS temporarily supplies selected consumers while diesel backup starts.

Automation coordinates these actions. Supported load, support duration and any interruption are calculated using equipment capabilities, charge and control settings. Adding storage does not by itself make the supply uninterrupted.
